The Host Model
A Flexible Way to Offer Hospitality
Host partners choose whether to offer selected nights, recurring midweek availability, a private room or suite, or an entire property. Availability is never assumed, and hosts remain in control of the dates and accommodations they choose to offer.
Donated Availability
The host contributes selected lodging nights as an in-kind charitable gift, subject to applicable tax guidance.
Verified At-Cost Availability
The host may request reimbursement for documented direct costs associated with the approved stay, without retail markup or profit.
ShelteringTree does not provide tax advice. Hosts are encouraged to consult their own tax professional regarding the deductibility of donated lodging or related expenses.
Why Hosts Matter
Open Nights Can Become Sacred Space
Unused or intentionally offered nights — a quiet midweek window, a seasonal lull, a guest suite that often sits empty — can become restorative retreat opportunities for ministry leaders who otherwise might never step away.
What Types of Properties May Qualify
A Range of Peaceful Settings
Examples include short-term rentals, guest homes, cabins, condos, retreat properties, private rooms or suites, and peaceful church-owned or ministry-owned lodging. Every property is reviewed before publication or use.
What Hosts Control
You Stay in Control
- Dates offered
- Whether the stay is donated or verified at cost
- Guest capacity
- House rules
- Pet policy
- Whether a room, suite, or entire property is offered
- Final acceptance of each proposed stay
How Guests Are Reviewed
Thoughtful Applicant Review
Guests complete a retreat application and are reviewed by ShelteringTree before they may request an available stay. Screening is intended to support a careful, prayerful process — it does not eliminate all risk.
